Welcome speech by Guy Verhofstadt
Over the past twenty-five years, about three million studentshave benefited from Erasmus grants and the programme is undoubtedly one of the major successes of the European Union. It fosters not only learning and understanding of the host country, but also a sense of belonging among students from different EU countries. Erasmus is a very important step towards the construction of a genuine European civil society.
Today the Erasmus programme, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, is affected by a lack of resources; while the number of young people participating in the programme increases year after year.
At a time when European integration is threatened by the rise of populism, it is more necessary than ever to foster active European citizenship and a European identity amongst young citizens.
